The word mediator comes from the Greek mesites which means a "go-between."
In ancient Greece the mesites was the name for a special 'slave' who was chosen for their particular attributes to be the family mediator. Another name was theraps, from which the word therapy comes. The mesites/theraps was held in very high regard and also expected to maintain strict confidentiality on any matters discussed with members of the household. The theraps offered each member of the family, including children and other slaves, an ear for his or her concerns and needs without fear of them being made public or passed to others in the household. The penalty for breaking confidentiality? Death!

Peer review is a CPD service for experienced mediators developed by Amanda Bucklow based on her unique research and further study into competence and strengths.
CPD 10 hours Law Society, Bar Council applied for.
Successful, effective mediators demonstrate many different styles based on unique combinations of skills, attributes and behaviours.
Amanda's latest research demonstrates that mediators operate from strengths and that developing self-awareness is an effective route to developing mastery. Her research, which began in 2001, has revealed that mediators operate most effectively when able to freely access 16 states which support the skills, attributes and behaviours and help craft agreements.
Peer Review Process: During the peer review, we will assess how and when the various states are consciously used.
Preparation: Review of recent mediation - 3 hours
During this session we will identify questions around what works and what challenges the mediator.
Attendance at a mediation: as observer or co-mediator.
During the mediation Amanda will use a unique tool to record the use of 'states' during the mediation. These 'snapshots' work as nmenonics to promote insight and understanding about what works and what was unhelpful. Used together with coaching and training interventions, the mediator develops a personal plan for development.
Post-mediation: Review and coaching in areas relevant to developing the mediator's effectiveness. 3 hours
