Profile - Charles Middleton-Smith

Charles Middleton-Smith can be relied upon to deal with the inevitable surprises of the mediation process with calmness, authority and optimism. Charles was accredited by CEDR in 1995.

From 1991 - 2007, Charles was a partner at Hammonds (now Squire Saunders) in London and is currently their consultant on ADR. 

Widely experienced in all manner of commercial cases, Charles has particular experience in media and fine art. Cases of note include: 

  • Two major High Court cases concerning the appointment of receivers over the assets of well known bands in the music sector
  • Working with commercial partner on the agreements relating to artists, including management, publishing, recording and for the exploitation of all relevant rights
  • Acting over a 15 year period for one of the world's largest advertising groups in its dispute resolution both through litigation and arbitration
  • Mediated cases requiring in depth understanding of commercial structures surrounding film production, music exploitation, performing arts, royalties, all relevant licence agreement, and the commercial consideration surrounding all these.
  • Comfortable with newspaper publishing/defamation issues.
  • Acting in resolution of numerous disputes arising from rock 'n' roll memorabilia sales by leading auction house.
  • Dispute as to the title to Mercedes car formerly owned by John Lennon - German law applied.
  • Proposed sale of Russian archive surrounding circumstances of the death of the Tsars - claim by descendent of compiler of archive.
  • Dispute as to title of Mussolini's diary

 Middleton-Smith projects 'Zen-like' calmness onto proceedings, while coolly identifying issues to address.
