The research project has two parallel strands of enquiry.

Firstly: what do experienced mediators believe are the most important strengths, skills, attributes and behaviours that help them create the right circumstances for settlement?

Secondly: what strengths, skills, attributes and behaviours do parties and their advisors value most? And what are the criteria for choosing a mediator?

The foundation phase of the project is now complete and the headline results are published.

Interviews will continue in order to keep the data relevant.

Purpose:
to develop an understanding of mediator competency which embraces the extraordinary variety of skills, attributes and behaviours that make an effective mediator. Most of these are very difficult to measure. For example: empathy, gravitas, fairness. These are qualities that highlighted consistently in the feedback of satisfied users.

The project is being carried out in association with The Centre of Applied Positive Psychology
